Acrylic stamps have not-so-recently made their place in the scrapbooking scene, and for a crafter, this is a must-have when it comes to designing you scrapbook. Acrylic stamps are a polymer product, made with acrylic acids, resulting in a plastic like material, which is "clingy" in nature. Because of which, they need not be permanently mounted on a wooden block like a rubber stamp.
Mounting
This is actually not even a step when it comes to acrylic stamps, since they do not require mounting because of their clingy polymer. They stick to an acrylic block without the need of a cushion, and because of its transparent nature, it can be visualized how they would look like during the making.
Storage
I like to use an empty CD case for storing my stamps. Reason? It's plastic resin coated, easy to carry around, and dust proof. But in case your acrylic stamp comes with a storage package, use that.
Maintenance
Now this is a part that requires care. Make sure follow the following steps, to ensure long-lasting stamp life.
- This isn't a medical product, but still, store in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunshine. Sunlight, "ages" the stamps, resulting in the stamp going yellow, instead of transparent and also making the plastic resin go hard and brittle.
- Make sure to clean the stamp after application. Use non-invasive solutions like hand soap and soft cloths for cleaning, baby wipes are also a great option for cleaning them. To remove any stains on the stamp, use diluted bleach water, and rub gently with a soft cloth, immediately rinsing with cold water.
- The clingy side might start losing its adhesive effectiveness after continuous use. This can be avoided with proper maintenance and cleaning. Try using soap and water if this happens. It will remove any dust particles or ink resins, and restore the "clinginess."
Another question that new scrapbookers often ask is that if they could use any acrylic stamp with any block out there. The answer is, generally, yes, as long as the stamp fits onto the block you are using. Both the stamps and the blocks are standard products, so it does not matter which two manufacturer's products you are pairing up. Each company brands their products to make them look unique, which might cause the confusion, but it is, at the end of the day, the same product. As a matter of fact, not only can any acrylic stamp be used with any block, you can even use any other surface to support the stamp too. And yes that would help cut down the cost if you're on a budget. It all depends on how creatively you can improvise a product to your use.
Can you use any rubber stamp to emboss?
I wanted to use a rubber stamp of a wintery snowy scene that is quite detailed. I have never done embossing yet. Can I use a detailed rubber stamp or will the emboss powder get thick when heated and overlap detailing? Thanks!
HI, Why should I use pigmented ink? I wanted to do a snowy Christmas scene and thought I would use clear ink and use bridal emboss powder. Is that wrong? Thanks for the detailed description btw! ![]()
You have all helped me so much. There is a lot of things I need to learn that is for sure. Thank you all.
I have used some very detailed rubber stamps and to be honest the pressure you use has far more of an effect than the stamp. Make sure you have pigment ink for embossing. Apply the ink to the stamp. Apply firm pressure, but do not mash the stamp on the paper. Cover entire stamped pattern with embossing powder and shake off the excess. Heat until melted. You should obviously do a few test pieces first to get the best results. I recently discovered the joy of embossing and rubber stamps. I had never done embossing before and now I am looking for things to emboss all the time! It is amazing!
