q2612a cartridge | HP 1012, 1015, 1018, 1020 review
The HP 1000 models were the most popular and reliable series of HP mono printers. They were based on the q2612a cartridge which fits in a variety of printers. The first of which was the HP 1012. This was a budget model printer than used the q2612a cartridge and was launched in the early part of the millennium. It was designed as a suitable home and office use printer that would offer an alternative to inkjet printers where colour printing was not required. The print speed is about 15 pages a minute with an original OEM HP branded q2612a cartridge although there is some anecdotal evidence that the use of a non branded or compatible / remanufactured q2612a cartridge can reduce this to around 12 pages a minute. Also, the print speed is reduced when printing h9igh volumes – the printer management system kicks to prevent overheating due the absence of an onboard fan.
The HP 1012 was superseded by the 1015/1018/1020 models which also used the q2612a cartridge. There are also some other models that have additional features such as the 3015 that incorporates a fax, photo copier and scanner. These features are also available on the 3020, 3030, 3050, 3052, 3055, M1005MFP, M1319MFP which all also take the q2612a cartridge. These are all reliable machines, however, they are substantially larger than the smaller 1000 series models (pictures are available at the q2612a cartridge website, however as they use the q2612a cartridge, they benefit from the printing economies of the smaller models – although again, they are limited to monochrome printing.
The latest printer to replace the 1000 series has been the P1505 which was launched in 2007. Priced at around £110 + vat, the P1005 is more expensive than the 1018, 1020, 1022 etc but is around fifty percent faster at a print per minute speed of up to 23 pages per minute. The biggest problem is that it no longer uses the q2612a cartridge. It uses the CB436a cartridge wich is substantially more expensive. The print life is about 2000 pages and the cost is £62.00 + VAT which is £72.00. Compare this to the q2612a cartridge which is about £49.99 including VAT and delivery and also has a print life of 2000 pages. Let's compare this price per page:
q2612a cartridge = £49.99 / 2000 pages = 2.4 pence per page
CB436a cartridge = £72.00 / 2000 pages = 3.6 pence per pagenbsp;This is a difference of 66%, so the q2612a cartridge is sixty six percent cheaper than the newer 436a. To put this in to context, if you are printing 10,000 pages a year then the q2612a cartridge will cost you £240, the CB346a will cost you £360.nbsp;So, there you have it, the wonderful HP 1000 series will be sadly missed, as will the q2612a cartridge.

Is it wise to leave an Epson Stylus CX9400Fax on 24/7?
I've come to accept the fact that this printer is an ink guzzling machine, and that Epson works hard to monopolize ink cartridge sales on their units. I've been relatively successful with using LD cartridges, although,sometimes needing to replace them beefore they are completely empty.
I've heard various opinions on leaving the unit on 24/7. I've been told that turning the unit off when not using , will extend the life of the machine. I've also read that you use more ink, and consequently create more issues when you turn the unit on and off during the day. Please advise..
