One way of making a song stick out to a listener is to have a key change. Making a song key change is like getting the brain to say "Whoa! What just happened!" But just like anything else, it can be used in the wrong way. When used in the right way, it can increase the song's sense of life and tenacity. But when used incorrectly, it can kill the song. Well, maybe kill is too strong of a word. Let's just say it'll weaken the tune. So here are some ways to use a key change.
Where In Your Song Should A Key Change Be Used?
When you write your song's key change, you should use it coming into a new section such as the chorus or bridge. If you have a key change occur in middle of the verse, it can cause a bit of confusion to the listener. Remember that the purpose of a change in keys is to give your song more of a "bang". Since the chorus is where a lot of the explosion occurs, that is where to place the change. Or maybe you want your final chorus to end the song with a bang. Then give your bridge a key change, then go back to the original key when coming back into the chorus.
There are ways in which key changes might have a negative effect on your song depending on what you want your song to sound like.
1. When you want to have the effect of a "bang" on your chorus, do not have a change in keys that makes the melody go down. That will suck the life out of the chorus. This is the only way your chorus will work when you have a melody that is on a lower register than the verse: have your latter choruses carry that melody an octave higher (which means that the melody is being sung higher). Listen to "Hanging By A Moment" by Lifehouse to hear an example of this.
So again, when you have a key change, you want it to take the melody higher. A good example of this is "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga. She changes keys from C minor (aka Eb Major) to the key of Ab Major and with the melody starting above the register of the verse. You can feel how the chorus pops out thanks to the sudden changing of keys.
2. If you switch keys into the bridge, you want your bridge to have a key change with the melody being in a lower register than the chorus. That way, the transition between your bridge and chorus gives an upward motion. This will give more weight to your chorus.
Key Change Tip
Key change using the 4th or 5th chord of the original key.
Let's say that your song started off in the key of C Major. Then you would make the switch from C Major into either the key of F Major or G Major since they are the 4th and 5th chord in the key of C Major. You can see how they are the 4th and 5th chords when I put the chords in C Major in order: C(I) - Dm(ii) - Em(iii) - F(IV) - G(V) - Am(vi) - Bdim(viio).
The reason for going off of the 4th or 5th chord is because those keys share several chords in common with the original key. So go back to C Major. The fourth note for C Major is F. C Major and F Major share the following chords: C, Dm, F, Am. The fifth note in the key of C Major is G. C Major and G Major share the following chords: G, Am, C, Em. Because they have share these common chords, the key change transition sounds smoother.
