What to Do and What Not to Do When Your Apple iPhone Gets Wet
When the Apple iPhone was released in 2007, it definitely revolutionized the world of mobile phones. Here was the ultimate multitasking phone wrapped up in one sleek, modern body. With the Apple iPhone, you could call, chat, text, play games, watch videos and load it with hundreds of apps that could do anything from balancing your checkbook to creating your own personal workout. One thing that your Apple iPhone can't do, though, is to go swimming in a pool of water.
But, you have to keep in mind that accidents do happen, even to Steve Jobs' magnificent piece of technology. You might suddenly drop your iPhone in your coffee mug or you might jump into a swimming pool with your beloved iPhone still in your pocket. If this happens, though, save your tears and don't rush off to buy a new unit. Here are some important facts to keep in mind so that you can save or even revitalize your wet iPhone.
What to Do With a Wet iPhone
Did you accidentally drop your iPhone into the sink? Before you throw it into the trash, consider the following tips on what to do with a wet iPhone.
1. Remove your iPhone from the source of water immediately. Fish it out of the sink, take it out of the pool or get out of the rain right away. The point is to get your iPhone to a safe, dry place, where you can perform emergency iPhone repairs right away.
2. Turn off your iPhone. Hit that power button immediately to turn off your iPhone. Electric currents and components of your phone might react to the water and cause your iPhone to corrode.
3. Make sure to take out your sim card immediately. Using a paper clip or the tiny tool that came with your iPhone, press the hole next to the sim card slot. Take out your sim card, wipe it and keep it in a safe place.
4. Wipe down your iPhone with a soft, dry cloth. Don't use anything that can scratch your iPhone. Make sure that everything, even the back of your iPhone, is completely dry. You can also use a vacuum to suck out extra moisture from your iPhone, especially from the sim card slot.
5. Use uncooked rice or silica gel to further remove moisture from your wet iPhone. This method may sound silly but it works. Place your iPhone in a container filled with uncooked rice. You can also put your iPhone in a bag with packets of silica gel (available in hardware stores). Leave your Apple iPhone in the container for about a day or two. The uncooked rice and the silica gel will be able to draw out moisture from your iPhone.
6. Go to the nearest Apple center. If all these steps don't work, be prepared to shell out money for iPhone repairs.
What Not to Do with a Wet iPhone
Now that we've gone through the important steps you have to take to save a wet iPhone, let's discuss what you shouldn't do with it.
1. Don't try to open or disassemble your iPhone. Water might get into the sensitive parts of your phone. And, more importantly, you might get void your warranty.
2. Don't try to dry your iPhone using the microwave, a hairdryer or other heating appliances. The heat from these could damage and melt different components of your iPhone. It might even ruin your phone's display.
3. Don't try to use a wet iPhone. Do not call or text anyone on your iPhone unless it's completely dry. Don't try to turn it on either if it suddenly turns off when you accidentally get it wet.
As they say, knowing is half the battle. And now that you've been taught what to do (and what not to do) with a wet iPhone, you can go out in the world more confident that you can keep your beloved phone safe from water.
