Aka Dew Drops
Owning a Pug has been one of the best and most rewarding experiences of my life. Every day I look into the sweet buggy eyes of my Pug and fall in love all over again. Here are just a few things I have found to be helpful in keeping my Pug healthy and happy:
Wrinkle/Fold Care - Those precious wrinkles on a Pug's face are called folds. Those adorable folds are little crevices that are perfect for collecting all sorts of bacteria and icky stuff. My Pug loves to wipe her face all over the couch, carpet, my shirt, the grass and everywhere else. I try to remember to clean them as often as possible. I buy the non-scented baby wipes and gently clean in between the wrinkles at least a couple times a week.
She's Got Betty Davis Eyes - Love the song, but seriously Pugs have very delicate eyes. Our pup requires eye drops to keep her eyes moist and free of eye boogers. Also we try to keep our backyard free of twigs or any debris that could hurt her eyes.
Hair Control - Pugs shed a ton! If you're looking for a dog who does not shed much, a Pug is not for you. Recently my husband went to get his oil changed and car detailed. The man at the car shop asked if we had a Pug. How did he know? He noticed all the fawn fur in the back seat and knew what it was because he had Pugs too. The fur gets everywhere! To help ease the shedding I take my little girl outside twice a week and brush her fur so it stays outside.
Mani/Pedi's (AKA Nail Clipping) - I honestly do not have great advice on this one, except get it done. My dog HATES to have her nails clipped, so much in fact she expresses how scared she is with presents from her anal glands. Not fun! Luckily we just take her to our beloved Vet who cuts those little nails every couple weeks for a small fee.
A Little Exercise Goes a Long Way - Pugs can get overheated very easily so do not over do it. I know after my puppy has been outside running around for less then 30 minutes on a warm day she is exhausted. Pugs cannot regulate their body temperature like other dogs because of their short noses so make sure they keep cool and very well hydrated. Remember, they are indoor dogs!
Nobody Likes Going The Doctor - Our animals have become very close to our Veterinarian. They know us very well and probably consider us over-protective parents, but we would not want it any other way. Pugs require a lot of general care and checkups. Be prepared for the monthly heartworm, flea & tick preventatives and other various medical expenses.
Now, that does not sound so bad does it? Regardless of cost, care and maintenance required with my Pug's care, I would not give her up for the world!
